There came a time
Of return to myself or nothing.
A time of asking the priests,
“Shall I get dressed?
“Shall I eat?”
All the while knowing
that every other slump on a stoop
believes weight is no matter.
I agree with them that water is injurious
and that’s why I avoided it like a newborn baby.
And wouldn’t you know it’s the godamned
air who shouted shouted obscenities
that I am obscure, that love is a bitch
with no perfume of breasts. That pink
has gone off to live with the devil.
That last part is what really helped to clear things up.

Wow! I remember that feeling.
ReplyDeleteA remarkable emotive description of a moment of crisis, a very real turning point. You show you difficult it is to get through, especially when other people behave as if your life is their business.. it's a shattering and a coalescing on the other side. Love is brave bitch.
ReplyDeleteOh, this is powerful — the force of your words compounded by the intensity of the emotions make it so good to read it out loud.
ReplyDeleteThis is powerful... what an interesting thought of a brutal end with a glimmer of hope for a new beginning.
ReplyDeleteIt can be surprising what shifts one's world once and for all--or not surprising at all, looking back.
ReplyDeleteDivorce definitely can turn into a riot. Oh, the marching drone of those who think they have a right to opinion your life to death. This is harsh truth burning down to a spark to light a new beginning.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the mix of concepts and how you incorporated earth, air, fire, and water. Wasn't sure if that intentional, but you did get all elements in there, which made the poem "whole"....which counterbalances the incompleteness and anger the narrator is feeling. Well done and viva la.
ReplyDeleteThis is incredibly potent!❤️ How we react in a moment of crisis changes everything.
ReplyDeleteSuch a powerful write.
ReplyDeleteStrong words for a turning point in your life. Vivid.
